Edith Garrud: the Suffragette who knew jujutsu

"Edith Garrud: the Suffragette who knew jujutsu" is the true story of the lady who taught self defence to the secret Bodyguard society of the British Suffragette movement at the height of their radical "Votes for Women!" campaign.

The book covers Edith Garrud's life and career as (probably) the first female professional self defence/martial arts instructor in England, and the adventures of the Bodyguard team in protecting their leaders from arrest and from assault by angry crowds.

Edith was also the star of possibly the first martial arts movie ever produced ("Jujutsu Downs the Footpads!", 1907).

The book is written to appeal to younger readers (aged 12 and over) but should please anyone intrigued by the notion of jujutsu-trained, Indian club wielding Suffragettes street-fighting with police in Edwardian London. My hope is that the book will also inspire some young people, especially girls, to stand up for what they believe in and to enroll in martial arts training.

My best,
